Best Products to Pack in Your Hospital Bag for Labor and Delivery

Updated: April 21, 2021

The day you welcome your little one to the world will undoubtedly be one of the most monumental experiences of your life. Because delivery day carries so much significance, tons of moms wonder exactly what to bring to the hospital for the big day.

While there is no universal packing list perfect for every single soon-to-be-parent, there are plenty of seasoned second-time moms, third-time moms and beyond who have gone through labor and delivery before and now know exactly what to pack in your hospital bag.

What first-time moms pack in their hospital bags vs. what second-time moms pack

Luckily, moms in the What To Expect community and WTE editors have the scoop on the best items to pack, from the items they wish they’d packed in their hospital bag but didn’t, as well as the things they packed but could’ve gone without.

While each mom’s list varied a little, the majority of moms recommend calling your hospital before the big day to ask what will be provided (like diapers, wipes, pads, mesh underwear and other must-haves). That way, you’ll know what things you don’t need to bring (so that there's extra room in your bag for all the hospital freebies!).

Below, everything real moms were glad they packed (or wish they had packed!) in their hospital bag before labor and delivery.

Your phone will come in handy for a ton of major delivery day moments: texting your family important updates, snapping photos, playing music and more. While you can certainly just pack your standard charger from home, several moms said that having an extra-long charger or an extension cord meant not having to get up from the hospital bed to use their phone. This 10-foot long charger fits the bill perfectly.

Length: 10 feet

Community Reviews

“[Pack] a longer charger cord! I bought a cheap 10-foot cord to bring, because the outlets are so far from the hospital bed. It was such a pain with my first.”

- xotessox11

“[Bring] a small extension cord for charging your phone. With my first it was great because I would move from the bed to the chair during labor and could still have my phone nearby.”

Bringing your favorite water bottle or thermos from home can prevent a bunch of trips to refill the tiny paper cups the hospital provides. Plus, it’ll keep your water colder for much longer. Some moms were especially thankful they brought a Yeti water bottle to keep their water extra-cold.

“In all seriousness, I’m packing my Yeti cup because I love cold water and that hospital ice is good, but it melts too fast."

When is packing this not a good idea? One of the most popular recommendations from experienced moms, lip balm is a must-pack that's easy to forget about. This four-pack of Burt’s Bees Lip Balm will keep your lips moist in the dry hospital air. Keeping lip balm on hand is especially helpful for moms that have a C-section, since the oxygen mask can potentially dry out your lips.

After giving birth, new moms experience postpartum bleeding, and having plenty of postpartum pads or adult diapers like these will help you stay comfortable and protect clothing. However, there’s a good chance your hospital provides these for you, so it’s a good idea to call and ask ahead of time to see if you really need to pack them.

Size: 32 pairs

Community Reviews

“I brought comfy adult diapers. My cousin had her baby before me and she used them, too. The ones for women come in black or tan and can't be noticed under clothes.”

While most moms recommend stocking up on the heavenly mesh underwear that the hospital usually provides, several moms also recommended bringing a large pair of regular postpartum underwear to put on over the mesh undies to keep everything in place. Frida Mom Postpartum Underwear will do the job well (plus, they’re disposable!). Even if you don’t use them, they won’t take up much room in your bag and you can use them at home.

Community Reviews

“Even though the hospital will give you mesh underwear (which is a lifesaver), pack some regular underwear to put on over it to really hold it in place.”

While the hospital bed will come with a pillow or two, a ton of moms recommend bringing your own. Hospital pillows have a reputation for being flimsy, and you’ll want to be as comfortable as possible for delivery. If your current pillow isn’t cutting it, this Casper Sleep Pillow will give you both support and comfort when you need it most.

Dimensions: 26 x 18 x 5 inches

Weight: 3.5 pounds

“I brought my pillow and I’m so glad I did, as [the hospital’s] sucked!”

- JZEESKY318

“I wish I had brought my own pillow! The hospital’s suck and it’s so nice to have something comforting and familiar to you at the hospital. I bet this seems like a no brainer to some but when I had my first it was the last thing on my mind to bring as I was rushing to get out the door to the hospital!”

After welcoming your baby to the world, you’ll (understandably!) be exhausted. It’s good to get plenty of sleep and recover from the delivery (you just brought a brand new human into the world, after all). That being said, your newborn might be extra fussy, making it next to impossible to get any Zzzs. Moms recommend bringing a pacifier so that you can get a little bit of rest. The Philips Avent Soothie is a great choice for your newborn.

Community Reviews

“I wish I had brought a pacifier! Most hospitals won’t give you one, but OH MAN that second night babies go through some serious cluster feeding. My husband had to sit holding our son with a pinky in his mouth for over an hour just so I could get some rest.”

While leggings might have been your loungewear uniform before you were expecting, you’ll want to prioritize total comfort right after giving birth. Moms swear by wearing as-loose-as-possible clothing for the trip home to go easy on your body. If you’re in need of a new pair of loose bottoms, these cozy terry Hanes sweatpants are a tried-and-true comfy option. Some moms also recommend bringing an extra change of clothes or two, in case you get extra sweaty or leak extra fluids on your clothes after delivery.

Community Reviews

“My sister brought me clothes to change into, and even though she brought ‘comfy’ sweats, they felt way too tight! I had to wear my hubby’s 2XL gym shorts because any pressure on my abdomen was hell. So make sure you pack super loose/baggy clothing.”

- Sopheroonie

“Bring loose, comfy clothes that aren’t pre-pregnancy clothes.  I took loose clothes but not loose enough.”

While the movies make it seem like delivery is a chaotic, fast-paced process with a lot of screaming, that’s not always the case. Sometimes labor can last for days, and a lot of moms say it’s good to be prepared with your favorite entertainment options to fill the time enjoyably. Having a book, tablet, laptop or even a deck of cards can help you pass the time while waiting for baby.

Community Reviews

“[Bring] some form of entertainment. Who knew how boring it would be sitting in a bed all day for two days with only a newborn baby who sleeps for over half the day as entertainment? I’m bringing a laptop this time so I can log into Netflix and Hulu.”
