Best Baby Books for Newborns to 1-Year-Olds, According to Parents (and Babies!) Who Love Them

Updated: October 11, 2021
Best Books for Newborn to 1-Year-Olds - "Hair Love" and "The Very Hungry Caterpillar"

There are tons of benefits to reading with your baby. Aside from being a great way to spend close-up face time with your little one, reading can help baby soak up all of the words you're using, which can boost vocabulary skills later in life.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends reading to your baby starting in early infancy. In 2017, the organization published a study that found that the more time parents spent reading and discussing age-appropriate books with their kids, the more prepared their little ones were to start reading once they got to kindergarten. So even though your newborn won't necessarily understand the stories you're reading, you are having a lasting impact on their literacy.

What to look for when you buy baby books

Really, any book is a good choice in the beginning — your baby will love being held by you and listening to your voice. But as he grows, the AAP says your child will be engaged best by books that have the following characteristics:

  • Sturdy pages — older babies love touching books (and will probably chew on it, too)
  • Bright colors
  • Patterns
  • Simple faces
  • Text that's simple, repetitive and/or rhyming
  • Interactive elements like flaps, fold-outs or textured areas

How we chose the best books for babies

What to Expect rounded up a mix of tried-and-true favorites, as well as recent bestsellers that are bound to become classic reads. We evaluated each book based on not just their popularity, but also whether they meet or exceed the buying standards outlined above.

The bottom line? Reading is a great way to introduce even the tiniest babies to new worlds and people. Whether they're introducing baby to new shapes and patterns or families from all different backgrounds, these baby books for newborns and older babies will make storytime that much more snuggly and fun for you both.

Kids learn the basics about how our world isn’t always fair, that people are different (and that’s okay!) and more fundamental lessons in becoming an anti-racist ally. The language might be a bit more advanced than other baby books, but it’s designed to be a conversation-starter between parents and kids to help them start talking about race and racism in our world — and how to fight it from the beginning.

This book was one of the first children’s books with explicit LGBTQ+ representation when it was published in 1989, and ignited a firestorm of controversy and debate. But the sweet story endured, thanks to its simple message that some kids have two moms — and that’s wonderful. In 2019, the book’s illustrations were updated, along with some elements of the plot (Heather’s moms are now married, something that wasn’t possible in 1989) to help it continue to resonate with the latest generation of readers.

Why We Love It

American society frequently tells Black people to change or hide their natural hair in the form of school dress codes and workplace norms about “professionalism.” Which is why Hair Love, which celebrates Black hair and father-daughter relationships, is such a breath of fresh air. Read the book with your little one and watch the Oscar-winning short film it inspired to understand just how important hair can be to self-expression and identity.

Why We Love It

Even kids who aren’t obsessed with cars will love the story of Little Blue Truck, who needs the help of friends to get out of a muddy rut. The rhyming verse and car sounds baked in the text will enchant your little one, while the message of kindness and solidarity will stick with them long after you close the book. It’s the first of several books about the Little Blue Truck and friends, too.

Specs: 30 pages; available in hardcover, board book and ebook formats

Why We Love It

This is another parental tear-jerker disguised as a bedtime story, but it’s a favorite among little ones. Father and son compete to prove who loves the other most in a series of feats — stretching their arms, jumping and more — that you can act out with your little one as you read together. It makes for a really special bedtime story that many parents rely on to soothe their kiddos.

Specs: 40 pages; available in hardcover, board book and pop-up book formats.

Why We Love It

Even big, tough trucks need to rest, and your little one will love helping send them all off to sleep after a long day at work in this fun rhyming story. Plus, construction-obsessed kids will enjoy seeing all the different kinds of machines represented in the illustrations, including cement mixers, dump trucks and bulldozers. The same characters reappear in other books from the author, too. Parents love it, although some wish there were female characters represented in the story.

A baby’s birth brings together a community, and in this story, that community includes Mother Earth, too. The lyrical poem, accompanied by beautiful illustrations, describes how animals from all over the Arctic converge to bring gifts and well-wishes to an Inuit newborn. (It’s written by the famous Inuit throat singer, Celina Kalluk.) It’s also available in French and Inuktitut.

Pros: Humorous read-aloud

Why We Love It

At the beginning of this sleepy book, everyone inside the “Napping House” is fast asleep — until a tiny surprise disrupts everyone’s rest. The repetitive rhymes are enchanting, and the cartoonish illustrations add an extra level of humor to the chaotic tale. Kids can learn about cause and effect from the story, and there’s plenty of room within the narrative to pause and ask kids what they think will happen next, or why certain characters are reacting in a certain way.
