Best Baby Laundry Detergents, According to Parents Who Use Them All the Time

Updated: July 26, 2021
Best Baby Laundry Detergent

As a new parent, you’re probably no stranger to endless piles of spit-up stained laundry. (Is there ever a time when the washer isn’t running?) But how do all those washings — and more specifically, the laundry detergent that goes in them — affect your baby’s super-soft, sensitive skin?

Is baby laundry detergent necessary?

A baby’s skin is more sensitive than an adult’s, and skin conditions like cradle cap or eczema can crop up in the months after birth.

The good news? You don’t necessarily have to cherry-pick a baby-specific laundry detergent. “While it’s not necessary to use detergent labeled as baby detergent, there are some important considerations when selecting a detergent for babies,” says Marisa Garshick, M.D., F.A.A.D., a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. “It is recommended to use detergent that is fragrance-free, as fragrance can be irritating for babies or those with sensitive skin. It is also important to distinguish fragrance-free from unscented, as unscented products often have a masking fragrance that takes away the scent but still can be irritating on the skin.” Other things to look for: detergents that are hypoallergenic and dye-free, plus harsh brighteners or industrial-strength bleach solutions, says Dr. Garshick.

Still, to make sure baby isn’t coming into contact with any unnecessary additives — especially some of those masked ingredients Garshick touched on. Many parents choose to use a gentle, baby-friendly laundry detergent when washing their little one's clothes.

If you do happen to notice a skin rash on your baby’s skin, call your pediatrician for further guidance.

Types of baby laundry detergent

Like other laundry products, baby-friendly laundry detergent comes in multiple forms:

  • Liquid: Liquid you portion out and pour into the machine
  • Tablets: Pre-portioned amounts of detergent you simply pop into the machine
  • Powder: Like liquid, powder requires measuring and then pouring that specific amount into your machine

How often should you wash baby clothes?

Though there’s hardly any questioning what should — and shouldn’t be — in baby laundry detergent, how often you wash clothing is most often a personal preference, though most will agree that it’s always important to wash baby’s clothing when it’s visibly soiled, says Dr. Garshick.

I love the smell of Dreft. I use it for at least the first year. My children seem to have very sensitive skin and I don't want to take any chances. My LO is almost 4 months and I'm still on the same bottle of Dreft.

An eco-friendly cleaning line, Rockin’ Green sells a formula that’s specifically targeted for hard water — i.e., water that contains dissolved calcium, magnesium and other metallic elements — which is a surprisingly commonplace occurrence in the United States. Their products are 100 percent vegan and contain no parabens, phosphates, brighteners or fragrances.

Still, parents say it cleans and even strips cloth diapers like nothing they’ve ever seen before — a true testament to its cleaning prowess, despite the fact that it’s vegan and entirely non-toxic. Each bag contains 45 ounces of powdered detergent.

“I also like that [Rockin' Green] has different formulas for different water types. We switched recently, and Hard Rock has made a difference with our super hard water. I no longer have to add tons of other stuff to get my diapers clean and stink-free!”

It’s hard to get much cuter than Babyganics — and their lavender-scented product certainly packs a powerful, stain-busting punch, too. Made of plant- and enzyme-based ingredients, their triple concentrated formula will net you about 60 loads of laundry per 60-ounce bottle. Plus, their product is cruelty-free, which means that it isn’t tested on animals.

And if you decide you love this product (we don’t know why you wouldn’t!), the company has an entire line of products that are just as gentle on baby’s skin, including shampoo, lotion and sunscreen.

Why We Love It

Formulated for people with sensitive skin and allergies, Puracy’s laundry detergent is made specifically from plant-derived ingredients. We also love how it comes in a no-mess pump bottle and is super-concentrated — one 24-ounce bottle yields a whopping 96 loads of laundry.

Size: 24 ounces

Community Reviews

"I’m now a Puracy laundry detergent convert (we previously used a locally made natural detergent)—the detergent is clearly effective, as clothes washed in it are noticeably fresh (plus it does well lifting basic stains and removing odors even without pre-soaking or spot treatment), but you need very little of it for even a full load of laundry, it washes clean, leaves no residue or scent, doesn’t gunk up our HE washer, and is gentle enough for me to use on baby clothes."

Any busy parent knows the value of having a single, reliable product. You don’t have to store a million bottles in some overcrowded cabinet and you’ll be less likely to forget which products are low and need replacing, leaving you with nothing when you need it most. Branch Basics Concentrate is just what you need for a wide range of cleaning tasks, including your baby’s laundry.

The extremely gentle formula mixes with nothing more than water to become everything from laundry detergent, to glass cleaner, to an all-purpose cleaning spray. It’s expensive, yes, but it’s a cost that’s well worth it considering the value. And if you utilize the convenient subscribe and save service, you’ll save 10 percent on every order.

“Love them! You can use their products for sooo much and I’ve seen Instagrammers soak laundry etc in their oxygen boost cleaner and the water is seriously black. I plan on buying the whole kit very soon! It’s also very environmentally friendly and chemical free."
