Best convertible strollers

It’s no surprise that a stroller is one of your biggest purchases as a new parent, and there are an overwhelming number of types to choose from, including full-size strollers, lightweight umbrella strollers, jogging strollers, reversible strollers and travel systems.

Another option to add to the list? A convertible stroller. These models, also known as single-to-double strollers, are designed to grow with your family, so you should only have to buy (and research your options!) once. As their name suggests, these strollers can work as a single or double stroller, and some can even accommodate up to three children. Families with children close in age or who are planning on having children close in age will get the most use out of these strollers as they’ll allow you to push both of your kids at once with the least amount of hassle.

How we chose the best convertible strollers

  • Per guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), every stroller on this list has a five-point harness and a wide, stable base.

  • We spoke to two parents in the WTE editorial team who have four children between them to get their honest feedback about some of the strollers on this list.

  • We utilized reviews from What to Expect’s community of caregivers to get a consensus on which convertible strollers parents felt were worth the money and supported their growing families best. Per their feedback, we made sure that every stroller on the list satisfied the following criteria:

    • Easy to push and maneuver, even with more than one child in stroller

    • Easy to modify to accommodate two or three children

Other factors to consider in a convertible stroller

There are a ton of convertible stroller models out there to choose from, depending on the features that matter most to you. When shopping, consider the following areas:

  • Functionality: When it comes to the functionality of a convertible stroller, there are a few areas to look at. One of the most important factors to consider is how smooth the ride is, for both you and baby. If you’re planning on using your stroller across all different types of surfaces, whether cobblestone or uneven sidewalks, you’ll want to consider strollers that have suspension and are shock-absorbing so the bumpiness won’t disrupt baby. This is even more important for a single-to-double stroller because you’ll be carrying an even heavier load.

Another function that may be important to you is having a large undercarriage that will make it easier to hold items on the go, whether at the store or visiting the park. Plus, it affords you the convenience of running errands without having to transfer baby to a shopping cart or try to wield both sets of wheels.

  • Adjustability: Although adjustability is important for any stroller, it’s especially important for convertible strollers. That’s because these models are capable of transforming into several different configurations. Some of the models on our list can accommodate up to 24 configurations, whether that means a bassinet and a car seat, one seat facing forward and while the other is backward, two seats facing backward and so on. Some models can fit up to three children, with the third often using a ride-along board, while others can only fit two.

Many models allow you to adjust the height and reclining position of the seats so baby can be in the exact position you prefer.

We also made sure that every model on this list includes an adjustable handle to make pushing the stroller more comfortable whether you, your partner or grandma are pushing.

  • Weight capacity: Looking for strollers with seats that have the highest weight capacity might be ideal for you to get the most use out of the stroller. Because you’re likely planning to use your convertible stroller for many years, you may want to look for models that can accommodate older toddlers so you can carry them along with their younger sibling.

What is a convertible stroller?

Convertible strollers are designed to be used from birth until your little one is well past toddlerhood (most have weight limits of 40 to 50 pounds) and adapt to your family's changing needs over time, converting from a single to a double stroller when needed.

With a range of possible seating configurations that work for newborns, bigger babies and toddlers who are sitting on their own (or some combination of all three, depending on how many kids you have), the appeal of a convertible stroller is that you can continue to adjust the settings to fit your family's changing needs.

In other words, with a single-to-double stroller, you shouldn’t need to upgrade to a brand new set of wheels if you have another baby.

Is it worth getting a convertible stroller?

If this is your first go-around at parenting, you might have a hard time justifying the price of a convertible stroller. But it’s worth pausing to consider your future plans before opting out of buying this type of stroller. If you plan to have more than one child under the age of three or four, convertible strollers are largely worth the upfront investment because you won’t have to pay to upgrade your current stroller later. Instead, you’ll be able to transport both of your children at the same time comfortably.

That said, convertible strollers tend to be a bit bulkier and heavier than other options, plus require you to store additional parts when not in use. If you live in a city apartment, a small home or drive a compact car, a single or umbrella-style stroller may be more practical for you.

Here’s a look at our favorite convertible strollers, made to fit every type of family and budget.

Why We Love It

Probably one of the most popular strollers among parents with more than one child in the What to Expect Community is the Uppababy Vista V2 Stroller. This workhorse can transport up to three kids of various ages, thanks to the capacity for two seats (infant and infant, infant and toddler, or toddler and toddler), plus a standing bench. Not quite there yet? Even parents of one love this stroller's compatible car seat (sold separately) and included bassinet, both of which you can easily detach with one hand and carry.

Of its many award-worthy features, those that stood out the most among What to Expect parents were the shock-absorbing wheels that allow for super smooth rides and the generous basket underneath that can hold up to 30 pounds (many parents noted that this was large enough for grocery trips). One parent noted that this stroller glides so smoothly that they could turn it 180 degrees with just one hand.

Lisafe Carreon, Senior Product Manager at What to Expect, agrees with the numerous positive reviews from What to Expect readers. “The versatility of the Uppa makes every cent worth it,” she says. “From the bassinet to the rumble seat to having the ability to hold two kids, has been super helpful!”

Robin Hilmantel, Senior Director of Editorial Strategy & Growth at What to Expect, also uses the Vista 2 and found that it delivers a smooth ride even when pushing a lot of weight. “It was easy to add a second seat when my next son was born,” she says. “Although you definitely notice the extra load — and length — while pushing, it's still easy to maneuver and a smooth ride for the kids.”

Like many other Uppababy fans, Robin praises the brand’s top-notch customer service. “Any time I've had an issue, they've been incredibly helpful,” she says. “Just make sure to register your stroller, which extends your warranty from two years to three years.”

Although the Vista V2 is pricey, it includes both the bassinet and rumble seat so you can start using it for two right away. If you already have the MESA Infant Car Seat, you can attach that directly to the stroller, too. The Vista V2 is also compatible with some other car seats from Chicco, Maxi-Cosi and Cybex when using the appropriate adapter.

"Love my Vista! So great navigating city streets and uneven sidewalks. The undercarriage storage is amazing, too."

- alona283

"I have one. Really happy with it - so smooth to push even when the basket is full. Don't find it heavy and it fits in my dual cab ute behind the driver's seat (tray is full of work gear). We got it because we knew we would have more than one baby and didn't want them too far apart plus the bassinet is approved for overnight sleeping so we didn't have to buy a separate bassinet."

- Moodr

"Yes we love the Vista! My Hubs thought I was crazy for wanting it but now he is hooked and always wants to push it. Such a smooth ride and great maneuverability for having so much twin stuff!"

- Kaytwins

"I have the vista with my twins and it's so nice. I got the mesa car seats as well, and the whole system is like a dream. Snaps in and out so easily, maneuvers smoothly and I think looks really nice! I was always turned off by huge bulky double strollers :l but anyway, I would HIGHLY recommend if your budget allows it."

Why We Love It

Nuna is another beloved brand among What to Expect readers and the Nuna Demi Grow is no exception. This luxe option is not only perfect for growing families, but it’s particularly great for all seasons thanks to a few special features. The most notable is the warm, padded all-season seat that is cozy for winter but converts to a mesh seat for summer. Plus, you’ll receive two canopies with your purchase: a mesh one that can be used in the warmer months to protect baby from bugs and the sun, and a full canopy that repels water and can be used for rainy or snowy days.

As far as the convertible features of this single-to-double stroller go, the Nuna Demi Grow can be turned into a whopping 23 different seating configurations. Even better? The stacked seat positioning, which keeps the bulk of the weight on the back wheels, makes the stroller a cinch to maneuver in tight spaces like city streets or narrow stores. One parent even pointed out that the weight distribution makes it exceptionally easy to pop the stroller up on a curb, which is impressive when you’re pushing two babies. It’s also fully compatible with the brand’s car seat for the ultimate in convenience during that first year. Parents also pointed out that both of the seats have a 50 pound weight limit, so you can use both for toddlers.

The biggest drawback to the Nuna Demi Grow is that you lose precious storage space underneath when adding the second seat, due to the positioning. Many parents in the What to Expect Community also didn’t like that the second seat is directly under the first and closer to the ground.

"I have the Nuna Demi Grow and love it... I find it fab to push and love the height adjustable handle. Loads of compliments from people on it and babs sleeps great in it."

- ains191

"I have the Nuna demi grow and I love it for outside walks in all seasons. It's a heavy duty stroller so I would only recommend if you plan on using it a lot outside. I bought a travel stroller that I leave in my car for errands and the mall as it's easier to fold up and fit in places."

- Ma1802

"I have the Demi grow and love it. My kids are 2.5 years apart. The Nuna has the same seat for both which is great and has a 50lb seat limit. The seat is also bigger in the demigrow. At 2 years when I was looking at both stroller my son had no room to grow into the reg seat of the vista but the Nuna was much roomier, I also like that when he is older he can sit in the bottom and stretch his legs down there. The downside is that you loose the basket underneath."

Why We Love It

Considered by many parents to be the cream of the convertible stroller crop, this Baby Jogger City Select 2 is a new design that is lighter and more compact than before, making it a great buy for families who live in cities or who are looking for an easy-to-transport everyday stroller. It boasts 24 seating configurations, with the new version offering extra room between seats so your kids are more comfortable and not on top of each other. Other perks: It folds up quickly and compactly — Baby Jogger claims that it’s 20 percent more compact than the Vista V2 — for easy storage, and the large under-seat basket can hold up to 15 pounds. Several parents in the What to Expect Community praised the maneuverability of the City Select 2, noting the front wheel suspension that allows for smoother rides over bumpy terrain. However, one con that a few reviewers mentioned is it can be hard to turn when your older child sits in the lower front seat.

"I LOVE our city select- it was our first purchase when we found it we were expecting again since our girls will be 15m apart. We've been using it with our oldest as a single stroller and it is so easy to steer one handed, super compact (I can fit it in the backseat of my Camry) and I love how versatile it is with how the seats lie back and have a good canopy."

- makeitaventi

"I have the city select! I’m FTM, it’s super light and not too big folded up."

- mamaaaaa2

"We have the baby jogger city select - it’s been through 2 kids (as a double stroller it is great) and it’s super durable (will surely make it through our third kid on the way!)... It’s wonderful in the city where we used it."

- machmil20

"We have the baby jogger city select as well. We are having #3 and I’m so thankful for it. My cousin also had 3 kids and had hers for 8 years. I love that it grows with you and there are so many ways to set up the seats. We take ours for walks, up and down trails (smooth trails I do have to say - anything decently steep or really rough it would not do well), to Disneyland, and everywhere in between. I also love that you can pack a million things into it. It holds so much and doesn’t tip or anything."

Why We Love It

There’s lots to love about the Evenflo Pivot Xpand stroller, which transitions from a single to a double with 22 different seating configurations. But one feature that really stands out is the enormous storage basket. Design to expand over two feet in length for when you need the extra room, it’ll easily hold all the essentials for a baby and a toddler, plus any other items that might need temporary stowing. Several reviewers loved this feature because they were able to go grocery shopping, with one parent noting that they were able to carry a 25-pound bag of dog food, two gallons of water, a gallon of milk and more — all in the basket alone!

In addition to the impressive basket, the Evenflo Pivot Xpand has a few other notable features. It’s a more cost-effective option than many of the strollers on this list, especially considering that the included toddler seat transforms into a bassinet so you won’t have to buy an extra piece for your newborn. It also has one of the largest weight limits at 55 pounds per child, which means you can get a lot of use out of it as your little one grows.

One thing to keep in mind: Many parents in the What to Expect Community found that the wheels get stuck. One parent noted using WD40 to fix the problem and only needed to use it once in a year and a half.

"I have this stroller and currently use it as a single with my 17-month-old and I love it!"

- cambriesmommy

"I looked at getting the city select lux double but found the evenflo Xpand and fell in love (mostly with the price). It’s basically the same except you save a TON. Since it is cheaper, it is a little flimsier feeling which is mostly my only complaint so far. The storage underneath is amazing and it moves well with my 40lb and 22lb toddlers in it. We’ve used it on outdoor walks, at the zoo, to/from gym from the car, and in a couple malls so far. It doesn’t move like my old stroller, which was a jogging stroller, but it hasn’t been a problem with maneuverability. It’s pretty compact and just I’m loving it overall. We’ve had it about a month so hopefully it continues to be what it seems to be!!"

"We have flown multiple trips with this stroller and done hiking with it and it’s survived 19 months."

Why We Love It

Other convertible strollers can hold two infant car seats at once, but the Bugaboo Donkey 5 Twin is one of the only options on the market that allows you to position the bassinets, car seats or stroller seats side by side. Many parents feel more comfortable being able to keep an eye on both babies at once instead of having one underneath the other, especially when you have twins. This also keeps both kids higher up off the ground, which makes many parents feel more at ease. Despite its mega capacity, you can still push the stroller with one hand because of its lightweight design and excellent set of wheels that allow for a smooth ride. And parents confirm that the 29 inch wide frame fits through most door frames, so you won’t have to worry about navigating the stroller out of your home and into stores. One thing to note is that if you use the car seat adapters, the frame gets wider and may be trickier to navigate through narrow spaces with some car seats.

What’s nice about the Bugaboo twin stroller is that the seats transform into bassinets so you immediately start using it with your newborns. The bassinets also feature aerated mattresses designed to keep baby cool or warm depending on the temperature. And, if you don’t want to use it as a twin, you don’t have to — the Bugaboo Donkey Twin works as a single stroller, too.

The most obvious downside is the high price, which is nearly double the next most expensive stroller on this list. However, Bugaboo offers a 100-day free trial and four-year warranty so you can make sure that it’s the right stroller for you.

"I absolutely love the donkey. I was also between the donkey and vista like you are. For me, as a FTM, I couldn’t imagine not being able to see both babies at once so the side by side nature of the donkey is what did it for me. Yes, it’s amazing that the vista makes it so that you can fit through any normal doorway no problem, but we honestly haven’t found that we’ve had all too much trouble with the donkey fitting through normal doorways because it is ADA compliant, which means that it should fit through most commercial doorways no problem, which it does."

- ABNics

"YES!!! We love the donkey twin. We agonized over the cost but decided resale value so good it will "even out". Whatever -- now that twins are here I couldn't be happier with it. It fits thru every doorway, is comfortable to push, easy to put together and take down, and the option to live it to a single is great."

"I love my graco stroller, it’s so easy to connect the car seat into! I think it depends on if you’re planning on getting a graco infant seat too or not. I honestly loved the seat we had for my son and since it’s not expired yet we will reuse for this baby. I can’t justify the cost of some of these strollers when our graco one is just as nice and has held up very well over the last 2 years."
